The William Jewell Cardinal women were unable to overcome an early second half run by Missouri S&T Saturday afternoon and fell to the Lady Miners, 67-63, in Liberty, Mo.
The Cardinal women went into the locker room at halftime down just one point at 33-32. However, in the first 10 minutes of the second half, Missouri S&T outscored William Jewell 21-11. Jewell used a string of three point plays by
Lauren Hall and
Cassy Nicolay to pull within five, but Jewell was never able to re-capture the lead. In the fateful second half, the Lady Miners shot 61% from the field while the Cardinal women managed just 29%. With the loss, Jewell falls to 11-6 (6-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference), while S&T improves to 13-5 (8-3 in the GLVC). S&T remains in position to challenge for the West Division Title.
For the Jewell women, they were led by a 13 point, 5 rebound effort by
Holly Switzer.
Lauren Hall added 12 points and 6 rebounds off the bench.
Jessie Wheeler scored 8 of her 11 points in the first half and was 3-3 from downtown.
Chelsea Meeks also scored 11 points, while collecting 5 steals.
Missouri S&T was led by Hailee Parks, who scored a game-high 26 points and collected 13 rebounds.
The Cardinal women will look to bounce back Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. against GLVC foe Maryville University at the Mabee Center. Jewell fell to the Saints 64-60 back on January 21 in St. Louis.
