Down by a 24-22 count at half, and down by six with approximately five minutes left in the game, the Cardinals (7-3, 2-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference) switched to a zone late in the game that helped change the momentum and pull out the victory. Jewell only turned the ball over 13 times and forced 16 Knight turnovers; they also went 9-12 from the line, culminating in Nicolay's late free throws.
Bellermine (6-6, 4-4) had a final shot to tie the game, but a straight-on three-pointer was off the back of the rim. The Knights were playing without two starters, one of them their leading scorer.
The Cardinal women return to the Mabee Center Thursday night to take on Southern Indiana. The tipoff is scheduled for 5:30.
