Softball Splits Pair in CBC Meltdown on Friday

The William Jewell softball team opened Friday's action with a tough 3-1 loss against Williams Baptist College then defeated Columbia College 10-4 in the Central Baptist College Meltdown tournament on Friday in Conway, Ark. 

Williams Baptist came into the contest ranked 18 in the latest NAIA poll.   Senior Maria Buckingham took the loss while not allowing an earned run.  Sophomore Rachel Hayden went two for three with a double and a run scored and first-year player Rachel Potvin collected her first college hit going one for three. 

In the nightcap, the Cardinals rebounded dominating the number 21 ranked team in the NAIA in Columbia College (Mo.). 

Hayden earned the victory by scattering five hits and allowing two runs while pitching four innings.  She  also was one for four at the plate with a two RBI double.  Designated hitter senior Erica Scowley was two for three with two RBI's and catcher sophomore Ashlee Nation was  one for two with three RBI's.   Senior Amanda Storm relieved Hayden and threw three  innings with three strikeouts. 

The Cardinals, 3-2 on the season, will continue play in the CBC Meltdown tournament on Saturday as they take on Avila University at 2:00 p.m.
