Box Score 2 The William Jewell College Softball team opened the 2014 Great Lakes Valley Conference schedule at home on Monday afternoon hosting the Saint Joseph's College Pumas in a doubleheader. This game was supposed to be played in Indiana, but weather forced the Pumas to travel to Liberty for the games. The Pumas and Cardinals split the contests with game one going to the Pumas 4-2 and game two favoring the Cardinals 7-2.
In game one, the Cards jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the second off of a
Brittany Madsen solo homerun. The Pumas answered in the following inning with a solo shot of their own, then took the lead with back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the fourth to put them ahead 4-1. The Cards threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs when
Rachel Potvin plated home
Kelsey Teneycke, but that's all the damage that was done as the game ended on a groundout to the pitcher.
Rachel Hayden took the loss for the Cardinals throwing a complete game, giving up four runs on seven hits and striking out two. Madsen paced the Cards on offense, going 2-2 with a homer.
In the second game, the tables were turned as the Cards offense struck, ousting the Pumas 7-2.
The Pumas struck first on a solo homerun in the bottom of the first, but the Cards answered in the top of the second with back-to-back homeruns by Annali Doleman with a two-run shot, and
Ashley Barrett to give the Cards a 3-1 lead. The Pumas answered in the bottom of the second with another solo homer, but that was all the runs they would score. The Cards padded their lead with two more runs as
Ashley Barrett led off with a double, then scored on a single by
Rachel Potvin. Potvin was then plated home off a
Rachel Hayden single. In the top of the seventh, the Cards got two more insurance runs, thanks to a
Faith Song RBI double and a
Kelsey Morgan RBI single.
Faith Song (3-4) grabbed the win, tossing a complete game giving up two runs on two hits while striking out four.
Ashley Barrett led the offensive attack that scored seven runs on 11 hits, as she went 2-3 with one RBI and two runs scored.
The Cards (5-7, 1-1 GLVC) will continue conference play this weekend as they play host on Saturday to Bellarmine University and University of Southern Indiana on Sunday. First pitches are at 12:00 p.m. both days.
