Box Score 2 The William Jewell Cardinals traveled to Rolla, Mo., on Sunday afternoon to take on the University of Missouri S&T Miners and got their first sweep of the season in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match up. The Cardinals won 5-2 in the first game and blanked the Miners 4-0 in the final game.
The Cards got on the board first in the third inning with
Annali Dolman scoring on a wild pitch.
Faith Song launched a three-run shot over the right field fence to give the cards a 4-0 advantage. S&T answered with a solo homerun in the fourth to narrow the gap to 4-1.
Rachel Potvin scored the Cardinals' fifth run off a Song RBI in the fifth to lengthen their lead to 5-1. The Miners scored a single run in the sixth, but that was the closest they would get to the Cardinals.
Offensively, Song led the Cardinals going 1-3 at the plate with a home run, while batting in four runs.
Kelsey Teneycke was a perfect 2-2 at the plate with the other RBI.
Rachel Hayden got the start for the Cardinals and bettered her record to 5-3 on the season. She gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out three in a complete game effort.
In the nightcap, the Cardinals blanked the Miners 4-0.
The Cardinals scored one run each in the second, third, sixth, and seventh to earn their win.
Hayden went 3-4 for the Cardinals with a double, and driving in two runs on the day. She doubled in the third to score Potvin and singled in the seventh to score
Megan Kappler. Teneycke continued her solid offensive performance on the day, going 1-2 and plating home
Eileen Greenwood in the sixth. Dolman also had a strong game at the plate, going 2-3 and scoring
Aerin Creamer in the first.
Song got the start in the final game on the weekend and went the distance. She scattered six hits and struck out two while giving up no runs.
The Cardinals improve to 10-12 overall on the season and 5-5 in the GLVC. The Cardinals will continue conference play during the week, hosting rival Rockhurst University on Wednesday afternoon in a home contest in Liberty, Mo. First pitch is scheduled at 2:00 p.m.
