The William Jewell Cardinal Track & Field teams headed south to Kinsgville, Texas to compete in the Cactus Cup hosted by Texas A&M – Kingsville. A mostly sunny day with a high in the mid-80's helped the Cardinal thinclads start the outdoor track & field season. Other teams competing were TAMU-Kingsville, Angelo State, TAMU-Commerce, University of the Incarnate Word, Texas-Pan American University, Southwestern (TX), Trinity (TX), and Concordia (TX). The Cardinal men placed sixth and the women finished seventh in the team scores.
Leading the way for the Cardinal women were sophomores Margaret Perko and Setoa Talimatasi. Perko placed third in the 100 Hurdles running 14.94 seconds. She also placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 5.43m (17'9.75") and seventh in the 400 Hurdles. Her time of 1:06.28 in the 400 hurdles ties the school record of 1:06.28 held by Zinka Duric who did not compete this weekend. Talimatasi placed second in the shot put with a toss of 12.95m (42' 6"). Other top performers for the women's team were Shelbie White who placed fourth in the pole vault clearing 2.74m (9'0"), Gretchen Mayes with a sixth place finish in the long jump with a mark 5.38m (17' 8.25"), and Myriah Bernard who finished eighth in the Hammer with a mark of 41.10m (134'10").
The freshmen trio of Blake Alexander, Trevor Nicks, and Alec Whiteside led the way for the men's team. Alexander placed fourth in the 110 Hurdles running 14.81 seconds. He also placed seventh in the 400 Hurdles running 56.95 seconds. Whiteside placed fourth in the Hammer with a heave of 47.10m (154.6"). In the shot put, Nicks placed seventh with a toss of 14.67m (48' 1.75"). In the vertical jumps, sophomore Will Frank finished seventh clearing 1.82m (5'11.5") and freshman Isaac Mattis finished eighth in the Pole Vault clearing 3.96m (13'0").
Next up for the Cardinals will be the Wendy's/PSU Invitational hosted by Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kansas on Saturday, March 29.
