Box Score 2 William Jewell volleyball fell to 1-4 on the season with a pair of losses Saturday at the Rockhurst University Classic Volleyball Tournament in Kansas City. Jewell lost to Pittsburg State University 3-2 and to Missouri Western University 3-0.
After winning their first match of the year on Friday, the Cardinals continued to play well in the opener Saturday, taking game one against the Gorillas 25-21 and outhitting PSU .205 to .167 largely due to aggressive serving and reliable serve receive passing. The Cards played well again in game two but dropped a 25-21 decision before regaining the momentum with a 25-18 win in game three.
Game four saw Jewell play well offensively, hitting .393 in the game, but Pittsburg State play better, hitting .529 and taking the game 25-19. The Gorillas continued hitting well into the deciding fifth game, winning 15-8 and hitting .500 in the game.
For Jewell,
Christina Pratt had 14 kills and hit .500 to lead the offense.
Libby Ording and
Lauren Holm each contributed 13 kills while
Amy Lindhorst had 22 assists and
Megan Hellwege had 20 additional assists, and
Lesley Iron had 19 digs. Holm added 15 more digs, and
Kaylee Marquardt had another 14 digs.
The second match of the day saw Jewell get off to a slow start against a hot-swinging Missouri Western team that hit .452 in rolling to a 25-6 win in game one. Despite the slow first game, the Cardinals rallied to lead for large parts of game two before bowing 25-23, and dropping a close third game 25-22.
Holm hit .258 for the match with 12 kills, Lindhorst had a dozen assists and
Libby Ording had four blocks for Jewell. MWSU hit .340 for the match, the Cardinals hit .115 as a team.
Jewell ends non-conference play Tuesday night, traveling to Emporia State University for a 7:00 match.
