Smith Earns All-GLVC Honors

Senior guard Aerial Smith was a unanimous selection to the Great Lakes Valley All-Conference team for 2014-15 as announced by the league office on Wednesday.  Smith also garned honors on the All-GLVC Defensive squad for the second straight season.   Smith helped lead the Cards to a 15-12 overall record and a 10-8 record in GLVC play.  She averaged 13.3 points and 6.0 rebounds in 26 conference games.

Lewis University junior guard Jamie Johnson has been named the 2014-15 Great Lakes Valley Conference women's basketball Player of the Year, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday.  Bellarmine University guard Raven Merriweather and Quincy University forward Anika Webster shared Freshman of the Year honors, while Lewis' Lisa Carlsen was honored by her peers as the Chuck Mallander Coach of the Year.  In addition, 20 student-athletes were honored as All-Conference honorees, while 10 representatives were named to the conference's All-Defensive Team.

Johnson earned the GLVC scoring title with 18.3 points per game, while helping pace her Flyers to the outright GLVC East Division title, a No. 1 national ranking for six weeks this season (currently No. 2), and the No. 2 seed in this week's GLVC Championship Tournament.  The South Holland, Illinois, native eclipsed the 30-point plateau twice this season, including a 36-point effort at St. Francis on Dec. 6, which tied the league's highest output on the year.  She won GLVC Player of the Week for her efforts, marking her second straight weekly accolade as she was also named the league's top player on Dec. 1.  Johnson ranked fourth in the GLVC in three-point shooting this season (.439), eighth in assist-turnover ratio (1.45), 11th with 3.21 assists per game, and 12th overall in field goal percentage (.488).  She becomes the second straight Flyer to win the conference's top honor as teammate Mariyah Brawner-Henley was voted Player of the Year by the league coaches last season, which is the second time Lewis has won consecutive annual awards as Mary Moskal and Darcee Schmidt were recognized in 2006 and 2007.  Overall, Johnson is the fifth Flyer to earn the GLVC's top honor.

The GLVC's top newcomer accolade is shared for the first time since the award was first given in 1984.  Bellarmine's Merriweather finished the regular season averaging 9.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, however her averages spiked in conference action as she went for 11.3 points and 5.4 boards in all 18 games.  The Louisville, Kentucky, native becomes the sixth Bellarmine freshman to be recognized and the first since Jalissa Chatlos earned the honor in 2010.  Quincy's Webster, a Springfield, Illinois, native, is the first Lady Hawk to earn the conference's coveted award, having averaged 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in her first season.

Lewis' Carlsen earns her second Coach of the Year honor in the last three years.  She was voted by her peers as the league's top coach following a 27-1 overall season and a 17-1 conference mark.  In addition to Johnson and Brawner-Henley, the latter of the two being a unanimous GLVC member, Carlsen also mentored a second-team All-GLVC standout in Jess Reinhart.

Drury's Annie Armstrong and William Jewell's Aerial Smith joined Brawner-Hensley as the lone unanimous first-team picks.

In addition to the two 10-member All-Conference teams, a 10-member All-Defensive team was named.
