The William Jewell women's basketball team traveled the short distance to Kansas City to take on UMKC in exhibition action on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals gave the NCAA I Roos all they could handle but fell 75-64.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Quarter: After shaking off a sluggish start, the Cardinals rallied with a 9-2 run, to end the quarter trailing just 14-11. Lindsey McCoy's two free throws with just over three minutes to go kick started the offense.
- 2nd Quarter: The run continued into the second frame as Kayla Harrell hit a three at the 9:37 mark to give the Cardinals their first lead at 17-16. The two teams traded points over the remaining nine minutes including each hitting a layup with under 25 seconds left in the half to make it a 33-32 game at the break in favor of Jewell.
- 3rd Quarter: After the intermission, a quick 8-0 spurt by UMKC gave them a lead they did not relinquish despite furious rallies by the Cardinals. Jewell ended the quarter trailing by just seven at 54-47.
- 4th Quarter: The Roos began to pull away in the fourth frame, leading by as many as 13. With under three minutes to play the Cardinals put together their final rally, going on a 7-2 run to pull within in 70-64 before being forced to foul. UMKC connected on six of seven free throws to seal the 11 point victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals and Roos, each playing in their first and only exhibition game of the season, played a high contested 40 minutes that included nine ties and ten lead changes.
- Jewell managed just eight points in the paint compared to 38 by UMKC.
- The Cardinals shot a blistering 47.6 percent from behind the three point line, led by four three pointers from McCoy.
- The Cardinals were outrebounded 36-33 but took advantage of free throw opportunities connecting on 22 of 29.
TURNING POINT
- Tied 42-42, with just under four minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Roos went on a 8-0 run to take a 50-42 advantage, a lead they did not relinquish.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Three players finished in double-figures for the Cardinals led by Harrell with 18, followed by McCoy with 15 and Katie Finn 10.
- Redshirt freshman Sydney Offield, playing her first game in a Cardinal uniform, posted a team-best seven rebounds and three assists.

The Cardinals officially open the 2017-18 season on Wednesday, November 15 as they travel to Missouri Western. Tip off is set for 5:00 p.m.
