Box Score 2 The William Jewell softball team dropped two games on Saturday afternoon at the Eight State Classic in Bentonville, Ark. The Cardinals fell 3-1 to Washburn before dropping a 13-2 decision to East Central (Okla.) Overall Jewell now stands at 1-3 on the young season.
GAME ONE | Jewell 1 - Washburn 3
In the morning session the Cardinals looked to strike early as
Madelynne Greenstreet ripped a lead off triple to the right field fence but was gunned down at the plate on a fly ball on the ensuing play. Despite the quick exit in the first inning, Jewell did take the lead first as
Emily Hoover blasted her second home run in as many days to give her team a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the third, the Ichabods tied the game at one before a two-out double from Dakota Sanders gave Washburn the 3-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth.
Greenstreet and Hoover led the Cardinal offense with two hits a piece.
Sydne Brashear posted Jewell's only other hit.
Anna Biondo (1-1) was saddled with the loss after going six and two-third innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits, while striking out six.
GAME TWO | Jewell 2 - East Central 13
In the afternoon game, Jewell struggled to find a rhythm and ultimately fell in six innings 13-2. The Cardinals started strong as they scored the game's first run for the fourth consecutive contest as Greenstreet doubled to right before advancing on a ground out and scoring on a wild pitch.
In the top of the third frame East Central scored five runs on four hits and three walks as the Cardinals used three pitchers to get out of the inning.
Jewell did get a run back as Madi Giles doubled over the head of the left fielder and scored on a single to center by
Kelsey Morgan. That was all for the Cardinal offense however, as the Tigers scored a run in the fourth inning and tacked on seven more in the sixth to bring the final to 13-2.
Greenstreet and Morgan each posted two hits while Giles and
Brooke Bernard added one a piece.
Cheyenne Carpenter suffered the loss to fall to 0-2 on the season. Greenstreet was the starter and went two and one-third, while freshman
Sarah Lewis made her debut in the circle and posted a productive two and one-third innings of work with two strikeouts before being hit by batted ball and exiting the game.
Jewell will close the Eight State Classic on Sunday afternoon with back-to-back games against Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western at 1:00 and 3:00 p.m. respectively.
