Â
On Saturday, quarterback
Will Schneider surpassed former All-American Kelly Groom for fifth all-time in single season passing yards with 1,958. Four of the top five passing quarterbacks for the Cardinals have worn the uniform in the past seven years, including
Nick West (2015), Brad Strauss (2017), and Sean Shelton (2012).Â
Â
Jalik Jaggwe moved past
Bulla Graft for seventh in a single season with 765 receiving yards and is now tied for fourth with six receiving touchdowns.Â
Â
LIMITING PENALTIES
The Cardinals have had their share of struggles this season but they have done a good job of avoiding hurting themselves further with penalties. Jewell ranks third in the GLVC and 14th nationally in fewest penalties per game with just over five. McKendree is tops in the league with 4.78.Â
Â
NO QUIT
For the second consecutive week and the third time this season Jewell will face a ranked team. Additionally, two other teams on the schedule have received votes in the national polls at various points during the season and another team has defeated two ranked opponents. The Cardinals have faced the nation's toughest schedule when comparing cumulative opposition winning percentage. 2019 opponents have a winning percentage of .632. Wayne State (MI), Millersville, Shippensburg, and Texas A&M-Commerce follow at 2-5 in strength of schedule.Â
Â
STILL STREAKING
Kicker
Dalton Dye continues to keep the Cardinals tied for first in the league alongside Indianapolis and Truman after hitting all 16 point-after-attempts this season. Dye has now hit 39 PAT in a row, dating back to November 2017. The redshirt junior has missed just two in his career, both coming during his freshman season. The NCAA record for consecutive PAT by kicking is 73 set by Luis Berlanga (Northwest Missouri State) in 2004 and later tied by Tom Schneider (North Alabama) in 2008.Â
Â
PRITZEL BACK TO QB
Redshirt sophomore
Anthony Pritzel came to the Cardinals three years ago as a quarterback from nearby Kearney High School. After spending his first two years splitting time between that position and receiver he has started six games on the outside. However, with the injury to backup quarterback
Dallas Crittenden, Pritzel has been brought back to the QB ranks and on Saturday at Grand Valley threw for 75 yards and a touchdown in limited duty late in the game. Â
Â
GLVC DEFENSIVE LEADERS
Brock Geisz continues to lead the Jewell defense with 9.1 tackles per game, good enough for fourth in the GLVC and 39th in NCAA-II.
Cameron McKasson sits at No. 10 with 7.7 per contest while
Jack Gordon,
Antonio Wabanimkee, and
Zac Bayless all sit just outside the top-10. On the outside,
Gianni D'Arienzo and
Donte' Colum have formed a solid 1-2 punch as they rank second and third in the GLVC in passes defended. Â
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Cardinals grabbed an early lead at No. 16 Grand Valley last week after
Dalton Dye drove a 47-yard field goal through the uprights however, the Lakers responded with 56 straight points. Jewell got a touchdown pass from
Anthony Pritzel to
Jalik Jaggwe from six yards out in the fourth quarter but Grand Valley followed with a pick six to push the score to the final.Â
Â
Pritzel finished with 75 yards and a score while Jaggwe had 49 yards on three receptions.
Nick Allsman led the running game with 24 yards.
Antonio Wabanimkee's 10 tackles paced the defense while
Cameron McKasson and
Kole Wagener each posted a sack.
