Lliteras Announces Retirement, Jewell Opens National Search for Head Football Coach

William Jewell interim head football coach Chuck Lliteras has announced his plans to retire, effective December 31. A national search will begin immediately for the next head football coach.

"We are thankful for the work that Coach Lliteras has put in during his time as a Cardinal, both as an assistant and interim head coach," said Director of Athletics Tom Eisenhauer. "He stepped into a new role this year and has been a great leader and advocate for the football program and William Jewell College and we wish he and his family all the best in retirement."

Lliteras took over as the interim head coach in February and led the Cardinals through the 2019 season after previously serving five years, over two stints, as Defensive Coordinator. He will retire following a career that spans more than four decades and includes collegiate stops at Fort Benning, Union College, William Penn, his alma mater Chadron State, and Garden City Community College, where he won a national championship in 2016.

"I have enjoyed my time leading this program but now it is time for me to step aside and allow the College to open the search. My family and I are extremely thankful and grateful for the opportunity to have served the institution, especially the student-athletes," said Lliteras.

William Jewell will immediately open a national search for the next head football coach. Historically, the Cardinals are one of the oldest and most decorated programs in the nation, owning nearly 600 wins since 1894. Jewell boasts more than 550 All-Conference selections, 70 All-Americans, 27 conference championships, four appearances in the national playoffs, including two runner-up finishes, and have appeared in five bowl games. Since the move to NCAA-II, Jewell has 57 All-Great Lakes Valley Conference selections, including eight first teamers and the 2012 Freshman of the Year. Also widely recognized as one of the top academic institutions in the region, the Cardinal football program boasts 217 Academic All-GLVC selections, 19 GLVC Council of Presidents' Academic Excellence Award recipients and 58 NAIA Scholar All-Americans.
