Cardinals Open GLVC Play at Southwest Baptist

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team looks to start fresh on Monday as they open Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Cardinals travel to Southwest Baptist to open the week before hosting Missouri S&T on Thursday.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • William Jewell enters conference play in search of their first win of the season, after falling to Baker and Lincoln prior to the Thanksgiving break. 
  • Kate Hillyer and Libby Arnold lead Jewell offensively with 8.8 and 8.5 points, respectively. As a team, the Cardinals   are averaging just 48.8 points per game. 
  • Jewell has continued to put together a staunch defensive effort, allowing opponents to shoot just 35.2% from the floor and 20% from the three-point line, both ranking first in the GLVC. They are seventh in scoring defense, giving up 64.2 points per game. 
  • Bailey Russell continues to be a menace to opposing guards, averaging 2.25 steals per game, sixth most in the GLVC. The senior is up to 48 takeaways in just 37 career games. 
  • Lea Finn put in a team-high 11 points against last week against Lincoln, her first double-digit performance of the season. The senior is five points shy of 300 for her career. 
  • A vast majority of the Cardinal roster will be playing their first game in the Great Lakes Valley Conference on Monday. The 10 newcomers this season have accounted for 58% of the offensive production and 57% of the rebounding.
  • Jill Slominski is in her 26th season at William Jewell, the most tenured coach in the department. Her 459 wins rank her tops among active GLVC coaches and 21st in Division II.
 
ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
  • Southwest Baptist opens conference play at 2-3 on the season, coming off a win over Rogers State. 
  • The Bearcats come averaging 65.8 points per game led by Kyleigh Vaught's 13, the only play in double figures. On the flip side, SBU allows 62.6 points, good for third in the GLVC. The senior also dishes out 2.2 assists per outing. 
  • Mary Rose Foster leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per contest, including 3.3 on the offensive side, fifth best in the conference. 
  • The Bearcats finished fourth in the GLVC West last season, going 5-14 through the conference-only schedule. 
  • Kelsey Keizer is now in her eighth season at the helm of the SBU program after three years as the top assistant.
     
ABOUT MISSOURI S&T 
  • Missouri S&T enters the opening week of GLVC play sitting at 1-3 on the season. After winning their opener over Blackburn by 65 points, the Miners have dropped their last three. 
  • Laura Rodriguez leads the offense with 14 points per game while Eryn Puett and Katelynne Roberts add 9.0 and 9.5 apiece. 
  • Roberts, a freshman from Illinois, also leads the team with 5.8 rebounds while shooting 70% from the floor. 
  • The Miners are third best in the GLVC, holding their opponents to just a 26.3% clip from three while connecting on 38.6% of their own.
  • Second year head coach Kira Carter leads the Miners after two seasons on staff at Sam Houston State.
