CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell enters the opening scrimmage under new leadership and eagerly headed in a new direction. Mike McGlinchey took over on January 29, 2020 and will finally be coaching his first game, nearly 14 months into his tenure. The head man came to the Cardinals from Colorado School of Mines where he served as the co-defensive coordinator, helping lead the program to three NCAA-II playoff appearances with one of the best defenses in the nation.
  • McGlinchey welcomed six new coaches to his staff, including coordinators Neil Linhart (offense) from South Dakota Mines and Jerome Riase (defense) from Morehead State. Offensive line coach Moses Harper and linebackers coach Pat Hansen remained on the staff.
  • The Cardinals will be young, with just 21 players who appeared in at least six games last season. A 34-member recruiting class will help fill in some of the gaps as several freshmen and transfers are expected to see time this spring
  • Under center, senior Will Schneider is back after earning All-GLVC Honorable Mention honors last season. In 2019, he threw for 2,405 yards, good enough for third all-time in program history, and 12 touchdowns. Additionally, he rushed for another 352 yards with eight scores. He is already the Cardinals NCAA-era leader in rushing touchdowns with 19 for his career while his 4,045 passing yards is fourth.
  • Also back is All-GLVC Second Team wide receiver Jalik Jaggwe. The senior caught 46 passes in 2019 for 923 yards, fifth all-time in a single season for the Cardinals, while scoring six times.
  • Defensively, Zac Bayless is the top returning tackler with his 79 total and 35 solos in 2019. The senior had a career-high 11 tackles against No. 3 Tarleton last November.
  • Jewell will be turning to a new kicker and punter this season following the graduation of former All-GLVC performer Dalton Dye. Brady Monks, a former All-Stater out of nearby Kearney High School is expected to take over the punting duties while Bradley West, a redshirt freshman from Columbia will start the year as the top kicker on the depth chart.
  • Along the offensive line, the Cardinals will benefit from the return of Zach White, who earned All-GLVC Honorable Mention honors as a redshirt freshman in 2019. Danny Presler is also back after appearing in all 11 games last season.

ABOUT QUINCY
  • Quincy went 5-6 last season, including a thrilling 47-42 win over the Cardinals, scoring the winning touchdown on a one-yard run with 23 seconds to play in the season finale for both teams.
  • The Hawks, who were third in the GLVC in total offense last season, graduated senior Andrew Lund, who threw for more than 3,100 yards and 22 touchdowns and will now turn to Tionne Harris to lead the charge. Harris, a junior, has not appeared in a game through his first two years.
  • Jalen Griffin was the top rusher for the Hawks in 2019, running for 692 yards and eight scores as a true freshman. Chris Poindexter is top returning receiver from last season, catching 25 passes for 352 yards. The Hawks are without the services of four players who combined for nearly 2,000 yards in 2019.
  • Defensively, Peyten Chappel finished last season second in the GLVC with 120 total tackles, an average of nearly 11 per game.
  • Gary Bass is in his fourth season at the helm of the Quincy program after serving as the offensive coordinator from 2015-2017 when he was named the interim head coach.
