Women's Basketball Heads to Indiana for Two Game Road Trip

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball is back on the road for a two-game swing in the Hoosier state.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • The Cardinals make the long trip to Indiana this weekend to take on two of the GLVC's top teams in Indianapolis and Southern Indiana. 
  • Saturday's matchup will feature the two winningest coaches in the GLVC as Jill Slominski and USI's Rick Stein combine for 863 wins over the last two-plus decades. 
  • Jewell averages 48.5 points per game, led by Kate Hillyer and Libby Arnold, who both average 9.4 points. Katie Knock adds 7.3, while all three also top the team in rebounds with at least 4.6.
  • Knock has been quiet at times in the scoring column but leads the Cardinals in nearly every other category with 5.5 rebounds, 0.9 blocks, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals. The sophomore has shown the ability to score though, put up double figures five times with a career high 17 coming against No. 1 Drury in early January. 
  • The Cardinals are one of the better defensive teams in the GLVC, holding opponents to a field goal percentage of 40.1%, fifth best in the league. 
  • Despite being without a true post player for the vast majority of the season, the Cardinals are one of the better shot blocking teams in the conference, averaging nearly three per game, sixth best in the GLVC. Jewell has an average height of 5'11 and use their length to disrupt offenses, as they are also ranked ninth with 13.94 turnovers forced per outing. From her point guard position, Katie Knock leads the Cardinals 0.9 rejections per game and 17 total, fifth best in a single season in the NCAA era. 
  • The Cardinals are in their 49th season of varsity basketball, and chasing the 800-win mark, entering the season at 785. The program has won nine conference championships and appeared in seven national tournaments. 
  • Jill Slominski entered the 2021-2022 season with 459 career wins, making her the winningest active coach in the GLVC and 21st in Division II.
     
ABOUT INDIANAPOLIS
  • Indianapolis enters the week at 7-11 on the season, 4-6 in conference play and have won three of their last four. 
  • Sadie Hill and Taylor Drury lead the UIndy offense with 12.9 and 11.8 points per game. As a team, the Greyhounds average just under 67 points per night while shooting better than 45% from the floor, second best in the conference and 19th nationally. In conference play, Hill and Drury are joined in double figures by Marissa Knobloch (10.5) and Elana Wells (10.3).  
  • The Greyhounds lead the GLVC with an 80.9% clip from the free throw line, seventh best in Division II and make more than 11 per game. 
  • UIndy is also one of the best three-point shooting teams in the league, hitting 35.8% from long range with more than seven per game, tops in the GLVC. 
  • Kristin Wodrich is in her sixth season at the helm of the UIndy program after spending three years as an assistant at IUPUI. As a player she was an All-Conference performer at UMBC.
     
ABOUT SOUTHERN INDIANA 
  • Southern Indiana comes into the weekend with an overall mark of 15-3 and 9-1 in conference play, having won three in a row and seven of their last eight. 
  • Four players, Hannah Haithcock (12.1), Meredith Raley (11.9), Emma DeHart (11.1) and Addy Blackwell (10.4) average in double figures while Ashlynn Brown adds 9.6 per night to pose a balanced attack. 
  • As a team, the Screaming Eagles lead the GLVC with more than 80 points per game, while allowing 68.9. 
  • USI leads the conference with 13.7 offensive rebounds per game, as a part of their more than 38 boards per night. Raley leads the team with 5.5 while Brown adds 5.2 and Haithcock 4.7. 
  • Rick Stein is a three-time GLVC Coach of the Year and second winningest coach in the league, behind only Jill Slominski. He's been with the program for 22 seasons as head coach but is also an alumnus of the men's program. His son Alex was an All-American for the Screaming Eagles while daught Mallorie played soccer for USI.
