ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The William Jewell baseball team split a doubleheader on Saturday at Missouri-St. Louis with a 9-2 win after a 13-5 loss in the opener. The Cardinals improve to 15-5 on the year, 2-1 in GLVC play.
GAME ONE: Jewell 5, UMSL 13
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell grabbed an early lead in the top of the second as Jonah Sanford singled, scoring Cole Conner who had walked. The Tritons responded immediately with six runs in the bottom of the frame to open a 6-1 lead.
- UMSL added five runs over the next two innings to open up a 10-run advantage.
- The Cardinals got a run back in the fifth and three more in the seventh but it was not enough as Jewell fell 13-5.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Anthony Hansen and Alex Epp combined for four of the team's six hits with the former posting his eighth home run of the season.
- Reed Pegram (1-1) took the loss, allowing seven earned runs.
GAME TWO: Jewell 9, UMSL 2
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Missouri-St. Louis scored in the bottom of the first to take an early lead in game two but the Cardinals responded as Chase Elias singled and scored on an RBI base hit from Drew Reed before the latter scoring on an RBI hit-by-pitch from Hansen.
- After the Tritons tied things up, the Cards went back on top in the fifth with two runs on three hits and RBI by Elias and Reed.
- Jewell took advantage of four UMSL errors in the top of the sixth, plating five runs to bring the score to the final.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals posted 11 hits, led by three from Jake Wilcox while Reed had three RBI.
- Hansen posted one RBI, the 95th of his career, to become Jewell's NCAA era leader.
- Jake MacDonald (4-0) went the distance, giving up just a single earned run while striking out six.
