LIBERTY, Mo. - After traveling more than 1,400 miles over the last two weeks William Jewell is back at Greene Stadium for the second half of the GLVC-GMAC scheduling alignment, hosting Kentucky Wesleyan.
THE SERIES
The Cardinals and Panthers are meeting for the fifth time, holding a 3-1 record during that time. Jewell dropped a 41-21 decision last season after winning the first three meetings from 2011-2013.
CARDINAL NOTES
- The offense has made steady progress through the first three weeks of the season. After scoring just 14 points in week one, the Cardinals got 21 last week and have upped their total offense per game to 235.3 yards. Jewell had season highs in passing yards and completions against Ohio Dominican as CJ Ward returned, after missing week two, and went 22-of-39 for 275 yards and two touchdowns.
- On the defensive side, Jewell stopped the run more effectively in week three, allowing 128 yards rushing, compared to 233 the previous week.
- Despite a season high five penalties for 50 yards last week against Ohio Dominican, the Cardinals still rank among Division II's best with an average of just 30.67 penalty yards per game, eighth nationally.
- When getting into the red zone, the Cardinals are effective, scoring on 7-of-8 tries. Their 87.5% rate is good for top-40 in Division II and fifth in the GLVC.
- Paul Geelen continues to be among the top punters in the GLVC, coming into the week at No. 3 with 37.8 yards per punt. The Cardinals punted just five times last week, their lowest total since October 16, 2021 against Missouri S&T.
- Jewell has used at least two quarterbacks in every game this season. The combination of CJ Ward, Taylor Eggers and Bart Harris has accounted for four touchdowns and a completion rate of nearly 49%, while Eggers has also been quite efficient with his legs, accounting for 43 positive yards. Ward has started two of the three games, while Harris took the start in week two with Ward out due to illness. However, the quarterback by committee approach has been effective at key moments.
- Tabren Yates has enjoyed playing against Ohio Dominican as the sophomore has posted his two best career games against the Panthers. After putting up 79 yards last season, he followed with 63 yards on 13 carries and a score last week.
- Carson Anderson and Adam Callahan lead the defense heading into week four. The former, a returning Second Team All-GLVC pick, is currently fourth in the GLVC with 0.67 sacks per game while Callahan leads the team and is fourth in the league with 7.7 total tackles per outing. Edd Becton and Preston Snead have also been effective along the line, with three tackles-for-loss.
- The Cardinals have picked off five passes this season, tops in the GLVC and eighth in Division II, by five different players. Sean Mitchell, Carson Anderson, Ethan Reynolds, Ethan Fuentes and Kwesi Hooks all have one pick, with the latter running it back for a 66-yard score.
- Greene Stadium was completed in 1955 and has served as the home of the Cardinals for the past 66 seasons but 2022 will be its last. Following the conclusion of the season construction will begin on The Link Project which will include among its features a new indoor arena, locker room and coaches spaces, athletic training room and student fitness center on the inside of the building along with a new stadium and campus entrance design on the outside. The $20 million campaign was matched this summer and the ceremonial ground breaking will take place on homecoming weekend, on the morning of October 1.
- Jewell will celebrate Hall of Fame Weekend this week. The 2022 Hall of Fame class celebrates the 50th Anniversary of Title IX and women's sports attaining varsity status on campus with the first all-women's class of inductees. The five individuals and three teams will be formally enshrined on Friday evening and be recognized at halftime of the football game on Saturday.
