INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – William Jewell's
John Gholson has been named the Great Lakes Valley Conference Freshman of the Year in men's wrestling, the league office announced on Thursday. He becomes Jewell's first major award winner and All-Conference honoree in the sport.
In his debut season with the Cardinals, the rookie went 16-8, including 6-1 in GLVC dual action. During the regular season, he placed second at the Kaufman/Brand/Bayly Open and fifth at the Drury Open. He was named the GLVC Wrestler of the Week on January 17 after going 4-0, including three wins in the GLVC, recording two falls and defeated Maryville's Bret Heil was, at the time, ranked 12th at 174. In addition to his Freshman of the Year honor, Gholson was selected to the All-GLVC Second Team at 184 pounds.
University of Indianapolis redshirt-sophomore Derek Blubaugh was named the 2022-23 Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) Wrestler of the Year while UIndy coach Jason Warthan was voted by his peers as the league's Coach of the Year.
Ouachita Baptist University earned the GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Team Award, while eight student-athletes who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior were also recognized, including Jewell's
Nate Wishne. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year.
