Softball Opens 2023 at Alvy Early Classic

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell softball team opens the 2023 season this weekend at the Alvy Early Classic in Bentonville, Arkansas. Weather has already altered the schedule as the first day of the tournament has been canceled and the Cardinals will now take on Northeastern State (Okla.) and Southern Arkansas on Saturday before wrapping up against Southern Nazarene on Sunday morning.  
 
NCAA ERA SERIES
  • Northeastern State (Okla.): 3-7 
    • Last Meeting: March 4, 2022 (5-1, W) 
  • Southern Arkansas: first meeting in the NCAA era
  • Southern Nazarene: 2-2 
    • Last Meeting: February 17, 2017 (8-1, W)
       
CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell is coming off a 17-31 season a year ago and graduated a significant portion of the offense and pitching staff, among them two-time All-GLVC third baseman Allison Rawls
  • Returning to Cardinal outfield are three players that saw significant time last season, including junior Sabrina Olmo who is the top returning player in batting average, hits, runs and stolen bases. Payton Totzke appeared in 36 games as a junior, hitting .257 while Abby Vandiver started 32 games and picked up 26 hits on the year. 
  • The infield will look vastly different with the departure of graduates at both corners and at second base. Sophia Lopez and Kenzie Stahl split time at shortstop last season and will return along with Kelli McCallister who missed 2022 due to injury. 
  • In the circle, Aliyah Santiago, Sydney Parra and Sammie Welt all appeared in at least 15 games and return to the staff in 2023. 
  • Jewell welcomed in a seven-member freshman class to the mix this spring including Addie Bell, Sheyenne Kelch, Olivia Wood, Katie Heckman, Grace Woods, Amanda Chung, and Mya Zavala.
  • The Cardinals were selected 11th in the preseason GLVC poll. 
  • Dustin Combs is in his 17th season with the Cardinals, with more than 400 career wins and is looking to get Jewell back to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 2018.
