Jewell Opens GLVC Play at Lincoln University

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell football team wraps up their season opening three-game road swing on Saturday as they head to Lincoln University of Missouri (0-2) to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

  • With wins at Fort Lewis and Kentucky Wesleyan, the Cardinals got back-to-back victories for the first time since 2015 when they won three in a row. Jewell will be searching for their first 3-0 start since 1983.
  • Jewell will face off with the Blue Tigers of Lincoln for the first time since 2018, when LU got their first-ever Great Lakes Valley Conference road win as an associate member, defeating the Cardinals 23-14 in Liberty. Jewell had won the previous four match ups by an average of 12.75 points is 4-1 all-time against the Blue Tigers. The Cardinals will see a familiar face on the opposite sideline as Lincoln head coach Moses Harper was an assistant coach for the Cardinals during the 2019 and 2020-21 seasons.
  • The Cardinal defense has been superb through the first two weeks of action, allowing only 36 total points for an average of 18 per game and only three touchdowns.
  • Tucker Griffin takes over the offense in week three. The redshirt freshman came on late in the first half last Saturday and sparked the Cardinals to a comeback win. In his first collegiate appearance he was 9-for-13 with 139 passing yards and one touchdown including a 48-yard connection to AJ Austene in a key spot in the second half. Additionally, he ran four times for 24 net yards.
  • Despite a young team with more than half its players being new to college football, Jewell comes into week three having shown early discipline ranking sixth nationally and first in GLVC in fewest penalties per game with just 3.50.
  • The defensive line was strong last week with 13 combined tackles-for-loss and four sacks. In total, Jewell leads the league and is eighth nationally in sacks and ninth in tackles-for-loss, a category where three of the top nine are GLVC teams.
  • On the other side of the ball, the offensive line has also shown out, as the Cardinals are one of only six teams in the country who have not allowed a sack yet this season. Additionally, they are tops in the GLVC and seventh in Division II in rushing offense.
  • Keaundre McCullough cooled just a bit last week but still ran for nearly 100 yards (98) on 24 carries with two more touchdowns, already surpassing his season total from a year ago. The redshirt senior ranks first in Division II in all-purpose yards per game (250.00), rushing yards per game (250), total rushing yards (500), rushing touchdowns (7), and is second in rushing yards per carry (10.20).
  • Javion Macias and Justin Endicott wreaked havoc last week on Kentucky Wesleyan quarterbacks and running backs. The duo combined for 12 tackles, including six for loss, and four sacks. Macias is currently third nationally with 1.50 sacks per game. He and Adam Callahan enter the week third in the GLVC with 5.5 solo tackles per game while Keagan Hart is 11th at 4.5.
  • Freshmen will play a large role in Saturday's game as the Cardinals have 12 redshirt or true rookies on the current depth chart, including four starters. Meanwhile Lincoln has 17 freshmen on the depth chart with seven listed as starters. Both teams are expected to star a freshman at quarterback.
  • Jason Ambroson will have the opportunity to coach his son Ayden for another four years while Darren Shaffer, Mark Faubion, '98, and Corey Bethany, '00 make four total coaches with their sons on the roster. Rookies Ayden Ambroson, Jake Shaffer and Bo Faubion, along with transfer wide receiver Jalen Bethany will wear the red and black with their dad, as the latter two become the second in their family to suit up for the Cardinals.
  • Along with coaching nine former players from Smithville High School, Jason Ambroson will also welcome back two former players as a member of his staff. Mark Faubion, '98 and Corey Bethany, '00 were both members of the William Jewell football program during Ambroson's first stint with the Cardinals, from 1997-2000, during which time he served as Special Teams Coordinator.
