Cardinals Host Northeastern State in Non-Conference Action

THIS WEEK'S ACTION:
vs. Northeastern State (Okla.) (3-3, Independent)

Saturday, October 18, 2025
3:00 PM • Greene Stadium

CARDINAL NOTES
  • William Jewell (2-4, 0-4) takes a step out of the thick of Great Lakes Valley Conference play this weekend to host their final non-conference match up of the year, welcoming Northeastern State (Okla.). The Cardinals are coming off a heartbreaking 34-33 overtime loss to Quincy University last weekend. Jewell hit a 49-yard field goal to force the extra period but a blocked PAT was ultimately the difference in the final.
  • With one of the oldest Division II football programs the country it's uncommon for the Cardinals to come across a new opponent but that is exactly what happens this weekend as Northeastern State comes to Liberty from Tahlequah, Okla. Football was introduced to the Jewell campus in 1888 while the Riverhawks came on board 21 years later as the programs are set to meet for the first time on Saturday afternoon.
  • It's homecoming on The Hill as Jewell will look to win their second homecoming game in three seasons, after defeating Upper Iowa in 2023, before falling to Missouri S&T a year ago. The Cardinals are officially 4-9 (one win by forfeit) in homecoming contests during the NCAA era.
  • For the first time since week 0, the Cardinals used a singular quarterback for the full 60 minutes last week. Tyler Kubat started his fourth straight game and seems to be settling in, throwing for more than 270 yards in each of the last three contests for seven touchdowns. The redshirt sophomore currently sits third in the GLVC with nearly 14 yards per completion and fifth with a completion percentage of better than 62%.
  • The Cardinals have seen a revolving door at quarterback for many years. Former two-time All-GLVC signal caller Will Schneider, '21, who is still on campus, now in his second year Jewell's Director of Athletics Compliance, was the last quarterback to start every game of a season back in 2019 (11 games). After an injury to Schneider in his final year in 2020 (played in spring 2021), Jewell has seen nine different players start under center over the course of 44 games.
  • Jewell has been able to spread the offense around this fall both on the ground and in the air. Eight different players have caught at least six passes while five different running backs have gotten the hand off. Last weekend eight players had at least one catch, which followed back-to-back games of 10-plus doing so. A year ago, the Cardinals had four players that finished with 200-plus receiving yards through 11 games, while this fall that number is already at three with three others boasting more than 120.
  • Among the receivers who have shined as of late are Nate Barnett and Reece Thomas. Barnett has picked up 194 yards and three touchdowns on eight catches over the last two weeks with two 70-plus yard touchdown receptions and ranks sixth in the league with more than 64 per game. Meanwhile Thomas had consecutive career-best games that totaled 12 receptions for 98 yards in the month of October. AJ Austene and Yasir Winston also have more than 220 yards receiving joining Barnett and Layne Cavanah with four different players with a touchdown reception this fall.
  • The Cardinal defense continues to wreak havoc on the ball, tied with Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) with 12 fumble recoveries to lead Division II. Jewell got another on Saturday by Jonny Williams, to up his total to two. Sonny Proctor is one of five players sitting atop the national rankings with three recoveries, with Williams, Justin Endicott, and Max McKenzie each have a pair, and Cameron Emmons, CJ Nelson, and Brock Williamson with one. The Cardinals have forced a fumble in each of their six contests this season.
  • Derrick Von Hubbard and Parker Cummins have been a tough one-two punch on the defensive line, combining for 8.5 sacks with Endicott and Kyler Craigg adding four more. The former two, account for 12 tackles-for-loss for 72 yards averaging 1.25 and 1.00 per game to rank fifth and 10th in the GLVC, respectively. The duo is second and sixth in the league with 0.92 and 0.60 sacks per outing.
  • Ronnie Thomas, Jr. moved into the starting role last week in the absence of MicahJo Barnett and has been effective on the ground. The junior running back has posted a combined 141 yards on 30 carries and a touchdown over the last two weeks, more than double his touches in the previous three games and triple his total yardage.
