CARDINAL NOTES
- William Jewell (2-7, 0-6 GLVC) head out on their final road trip of the season this weekend bound for Kirksville, Mo. and a date with the Truman State Bulldogs (6-3, 5-1 GLVC). The Cardinals will be looking to snap a 10-game losing streak to Truman, dating back to 2015. One of the oldest active opponents in the repertoire, the Cardinals and Bulldogs have been doing battle since 1903 with Truman leading the series, 17-8-2.
- Jewell is coming off another tough loss as they rallied to complete a second half comeback after trailing by eight in the fourth quarter but fell 24-17 at Missouri S&T. The Cardinals knotted the score at 17-all after a Reece Thomas touchdown reception and two-point conversion but the could not hold it, as the Miners ran for a 60-yard game winning score on the ensuing play.
- The Cardinals have been strong out of the locker room throughout the season, being outscored by only 10 points in the first quarters and nine in the third quarters. However, the second and fourth frames have been less kind. Jewell has been outscored by 36 points in the second period and 23 in the fourth.Â
- Jewell will look to play spoiler this week as Truman State enters the game listed among the top-10 in the current Super Region 3 rankings, alongside GLVC foes UIndy (#3) and Upper Iowa (#9). The Bulldogs are currently sitting in the seventh spot at 6-2 in in-region contests, with the top-8 gaining a spot in the championship field.Â
- Bleu Renfrow hit another 45 yard field goal last weekend to give him five of at least 40 yards. His season long of 52 against Fort Lewis College leads the GLVC this season and is tied for 13th longest in Division II and is sixth among all NCAA freshmen, tops in D-II.Â
- In terms of connecting with open receivers, Tyler Kubat has been one of the best in Division II. The redshirt sophomore enters the week ranked fourth in the GLVC and 26th in the nation with a completion percentage of better than 64%, on pace to break the Jewell single season record. Last weekend, he went 22-of-32 for 247 yards and has accumulated at least 200 yards in six of seven starts. His 1,729 passing yards surpassed Sean Shelton last weekend for 10th in a single season.Â
- Derrick Von Hubbard blocked a Missouri S&T kick last weekend, the second of his career, to go with eight tackles. The redshirt sophomore out of Georgia has enjoyed a strong year on the line, sitting with nine tackles for loss for 51 yards, tied for sixth in the GLVC this season, and 12th all-time for the Cardinals.
- Grabbing two interceptions last weekend, one each by Devin Walton and Ben Murawski, the Cardinals continue to help pace the GLVC in turnovers gained, tied with UIndy with 18 total. Both players are tied for second in the GLVCÂ with two picks this year while Jonny Williams and Keagan Hart each have one.
