The Cardinals survived a late rally by Kentucky Wesleyan College to hold on to a 17-12 win Saturday in Owensboro, KY. A late interception by
Owen Hodges in the end zone sealed the win with :30 seconds left and the Cardinals clinging to a lead.
A 3-0 lead for Jewell at halftime expanded to 17-3 in the third quarter after two Panther fumbles were cashed in for touchdowns, the first on a 26 yard strike from Shawn Shelton to
Ethan Cunningham, and the second on a 2 yard run by
Chris Stuart. Wesleyan came back with nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter (they missed on a two point conversion try) and were driving for a potential winning score before the Hodges interception.
Shelton was 29-41, passing for 293 yards and a touchdown without an interception. Phil Freeman had eight receptions for 79 yards, and Hodges led the Cardinals with 8.5 tackles.
The Cardinals finish the year 4-6, their first year in NCAA Division II play. The three game winning streak is the first for Jewell football since 2002.
