Cards Fall to Quincy in 2012 Season Finale

Box Score
Coming off of two road losses, William Jewell returned home to Greene Stadium for their final home game of the season where they faced off against the Quincy University Hawks from Quincy, Ill.

On this senior day in Liberty, the Cardinals looked to end their season with a victory. However, they would be playing a Quincy team that has a very good run game allowing them to control the ball for the majority of the game.

After an emotional pre game, where a strong group of senior leaders were recognized, the Cardinals started of slow, giving up the ball deep in their own territory on the first drive. This would quickly turn around and hurt William Jewell as Quincy would use the short field to their advantage and take a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter.

While the rest of the first quarter was very back and forth William Jewell finished strong with a long drive on the legs of first-year running back Thomas Cook Jr. They would finish the drive in the early seconds of the second quarter with a four yard run by Cook Jr., to tie the game up at 7 points apiece.

A fumble deep in Quincy's territory would halt another strong drive by the Cardinals and give Quincy the ball with just over seven minutes left in the first half. This would prove to be the last real chance William Jewell would have to score before halftime as Quincy would use their strong ground game to eat up almost all of the remaining time. Not only would the Hawks control the ball for almost seven minutes, using a fake punt to keep their drive alive, they would also cap off the long drive with a touchdown to make the score 14-7 going into halftime.

Coming back from halftime, the Cardinals defense came out prepared for Quincy's running game. After having great success on the ground in the first half, Quincy's offense was stopped on their first drive. After a one yard punt, due to a stiff wind on the hill, William Jewell's offense would take full advantage of the short field and tie the game up 14-14 on a 27 yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Shaun Shelton to senior wide receiver Scott Buffa.

After starting strong in the second half, the Cardinals couldn't quite hang on as Quincy would respond with a long clock eating drive that would result in a 15 yard touchdown pass that would put the Hawks in the lead 21-14 which would prove to be the final score as the Hawks would hang on to defeat the Cardinals.

The William Jewell Cardinals would finish their first full time season as a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, of the NCAA Division II, with a record of 2-9 and a GLVC record of 1-7.
