Cardinals Sweep Doubleheader with Minot State

William Jewell's baseball Cardinals opened up their 2012 home season on Saturday by sweeping Minot State University by scores of 3-2 and 2-1.

In game one the Cardinals jumped out to 2-0 lead after the first inning.  Minot State tied it up at 2 in the top of the third and Jewell scored the games final run in the bottom of the third.

Drew Mitrisin (1-1) pitched six innings giving up six hits and two runs while striking out five and walking three.

Trevor Bowden and David Smith both collected two hits in game one for Jewell.

In game two, the Cardinals won in extra innings.  Junior JP Bartmess singled with one out.  He then stole second base and after Tommy Herrera was hit by a pitch Bryan Rezin singled to load up the bases.  Bartmess then scored the winning run on a fielder's choice to give the Cardinals the doubleheader sweep.

David Collins (1-1) picked up the win with a solid 8 inning effort giving up only five hits, one run and struck out two.

The Cardinals, 3-3 on the year, will face Minot State for another doubleheader on Sunday starting at 12:00 p.m. at Jack Talley Stadium on the Jewell Campus in Liberty, Mo.
