The William Jewell Cardinals finished their four game series against Minot State University today at Jack Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals downed the beavers 2-1 in the opener before falling 9-7 in game two.
In game one starter
Preston Felgate (1-0) allowed a mere three hits and one run in six solid innings. He also struck out four and walked one.
Senior shortstop
David Smith delivered two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Senior third baseman
Tommy Thornton also collected two hits and a run scored for Jewell including a key double in the bottom of the sixth with the game tied 1-1. Thornton would come around to score the winning run in that inning.
In game two the Cardinals jumped out to a 7-1 lead heading into the top of the fifth inning. Minot state then scored two runs in the fifth, five in the sixth and one in the seventh to earn the 9-7 win which was the Beavers' first win of 2012.
Starter
Cody Downing gave up 9 hits and 7 runs (6 earned) in 5 2/3 innings but
Ron Johnson (0-1) took the loss for the Cards giving up the go ahead run in the top of the sixth.
Center Fielder
Kaleb Shaw went two for four with three RBI's and
David Smith went one for two with two walks and two RBI's.
The Cardinals, 4-4 on the year, will begin a four game series with The University of Sioux Falls with two games on Saturday, March 10 and two games on Sunday, March 11 at 12:00 p.m. at Jack Talley Stadium on the Jewell campus in Liberty, Mo.
