The William Jewell Cardinal baseball team (11-13,4-8 GLVC) split a pair of contests on Sunday afternoon against Maryville University winning game one 14-9 and dropping game two 6-4.
The Cardinals got off to a great start scoring eight runs in the top of third inning in game one.
Tommy Thornton who led off the inning with a strikeout redeemed himself by smacking a two run homerun later in the inning. Jewell picked up three runs in the fourth, a single run in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Maryville made it interesting scoring three in the third, five in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Drew Mitrisin led the Cardinal offensive attack going three for five with three RBI's and two runs scored.
JP Bartmess also collected three hits with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases.
Matt Milz (1-1) got the win and struck out one in four and one third innings of work, while giving up 13 hits and allowing eight runs.
Game two saw the Cardinals fall behind early, trailing 5-0 after two innings.
The Cardinals came back in the top of the third to score two runs then scored single runs in the sixth and eighth inning respectively to close to gap to one run. Maryville then scored an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth to give them the 6-4 winning margin.
Preston Felgate (2-4) took the loss allowing just two hits and four runs and was not able to record any outs in the first inning of work.
Drew Mitrisin came on in relief and pitched eight solid innings allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned) while striking out four.
JP Bartmess continued his hot streak by collecting three more hits and an RBI for Jewell.
The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday, when they meet up with Rockhurst University for another double header, starting at 4:00 p.m. in Kansas City, Mo.
