Jewell lost both ends of a twinbill against GLVC Western Divsion foe Missouri-St. Louis Saturday by identical 4-3 scores, the first in nine innings and the second in seven innings.
UMSL (14-16, 7-11 in the GLVC) takes three of the four games in the series and leaps past Jewell (13-17, 6-12) in the middle of the Western Division race.
David Collins took the loss in the first game, pitching a strong nine innings but giving up a solo homerun in the top of the ninth to break a three-all tie; at one point midway in the game, Collins retired 14 straight hitters.
Brian Rezin went 2-3 with a double and two rbi in the first game, and
Drew Mitrisin also went 2-3 with a double and an rbi.
Kaleb Shaw and
Willie Gaball had two hits in the game.
In the second game,
Cody Downing was touched for four runs--all unearned--in taking the loss. The Cardinals outhit UMSL 6-5, but four Cardinal errors figured into the scoring. UMSL again used a late-inning hit, as Downing allowed a two-run triple in the top of the seventh inning allowing the Tritons to take the lead in the final frame again. J. P. Bartmess had two rbi in the game, and Gaball added a sacrifice fly for Jewell.
David Smith had two hits for Jewell.
The Cardinals will play a non-conference home doubleheader Tuesday at home against Saint Mary's, then travel to Drury next weekend for four games against the Panthers.
