Cards Fall in Season Opening Matches

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The William Jewell College volleyball team opened their season Friday at the Pittsburg State University Invitational falling in their first two matches of the 2012 season.

The Cardinals (0-2) opened the tournament with a 3-0 loss to Emporia State University and fell 3-1 in their second game to Harding University.

Emporia State challenged the Cardinals from the get go taking control early edging out Jewell 25-22 and 25-21 to take the first two sets.

Emporia then proved too much for the Cards in the third set closing out the match 25-15.

Senior outside hitter Hannah Herndon led the Jewell attack with 9 kills while senior Kelsey Moffit contributed 11 assists.

Defensive specialist Katie Damgar added a team high 16 digs. 

The Cardinals then fell 3-1 to Harding University by scores of 25-23, 25-23, 18-25, 25-22 to close out their first day of competition at the Pittsburg State Tournament.

Herndon dished up a team-high 11 kills and newcomer Kaylee Marquardt finished with 9 kills for the Cards.

Cailynn Hayter tallied 20 assists to total 30 on the day while Damgar tallied 23 digs and totaled 39 on the day.

The Cardinals return to the Pittsburg State Invitational tomorrow, September 1, taking on Missouri Southern and host Pittsburg State at 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. respectively.
