The William Jewell College volleyball team picked up its first win of the season Saturday by defeating Missouri Southern 3-2 (17-25, 25-13, 21-25, 25-8, 15-10) at the Pittsburg State University Classic in Pittsburg, Kan.  Jewell then fell 3-1 to host Pittsburg State (28-30, 25-23, 26-24, 25-23) in the nightcap and completed the season-opening tournament with a 1-3 record.

In the first match, Missouri Southern jumped out to a 1-0 lead after posting a 25-17 win in the first set.  The Cardinals evened the match  a 25-17 win in the second set, but Missouri Southern would not go away quietly as they took a 2-1 lead with a 25-21 set win in the third.  The Cardinals regrouped and dominated the fourth set using a key 8-0 run to take the fourth 25-8.   

In the deciding fifth set, the score was tied at 9-9 when the Cardinals scored three in a row to grab a 12-9 lead.  Southern would cut the lead to 12-10 but Jewell was able to close things out with kills by Cailynn Hayter, Hannah Herndon and Christina Pratt.

The Cardinals hit .617 over the final two sets and finished with a .308 attack pct. for the match.

Pratt contributed 33 kills and Herndon tossed in 29 kills and eight digs.   Hayter led the Cards with 25 assists and Katie Damgar picked up 15 digs on defense.

The final game of the tournament between Jewell and Pittsburg State proved to be a tightly contested match.  The Cards  jumped out to 1-0 lead with a 30-28 victory in the first set.  The Gorillas fought back with wins in sets two and three to gain a 2-1 advantage. 

In set four, the score went back and forth all set.  Jewell tied the game at 21-21 but the Gorillas used a late 4-2 run to close out the deciding set 25-23. 

Jordan Jackson (16 kills), Herndon (15 kills and 10 digs), and Kaylee Marquardt (11 kills and 13 digs) led the Cards offensively.  Hayter (28 assists, 13 digs) joined Herndon and Marquardt with a double-double performance of her own and Damgar tallied 29 digs to finish with 44 on the day.  Damgar was also named to the Gorilla Volleyball All-Tournament Team as the Top Digs Recipient.


The Cardinals 1-3 on the season,  will participate in the Tarlenton State University Tournament on September 7 and September 8.
