Cards Upend Quincy With Dramatic Frevert Field Goal

Cardinal football won their second game of the season Saturday in Quincy, Illinois with a dramatic late field goal, downing the Hawks 19-17 in Great Lakes Valley Conference football.

Warren Frevert, who had had two field goals blocked and missed another attempt ealier in the game, hit two clutch field goals late in the game.  The first was a 39 yard kick against a howling crosswind to put the Cardinals up 16-7 late in the third quarter, and the second was a 45 yarder with the swirling wind at his back to give Jewell the lead with 1:03 to play.

The final score was set up after the Hawks (2-6, 1-3 GLVC) hit a 20 yard field goal with 1:32 to play, giving Quincy a late lead.  On the ensuing kickoff, however, a ball that seemed headed into the Jewell endzone took a sudden sidewise bounce into the hands of returner Anthony Mullens, who caught a surprised Hawk coverage team flatfooted, racing down the right sideline to the Hawk 35.  After three plays, the Cardinals called on Frevert for the eventual game winner.

The drama didn't end there, however, as Quincy came back with a vengence.  Starting from their own eight yard line, the Hawks drove to midfield.  With 18 seconds left, a long competion in the middle of the field ended with Thomas Clanton's hard hit, forcing a fumble that Jewell recovered to effectively end the game with 11 seconds remaining.

Thomas Cook, Jr. had 162 yards rushing, including a 64 yard touchdown run on the first series of the game.  Sean Shelton was 11-21 for 87 yards, Chris Smith had four receptions for 26 yards, and Clanton, Thomas Swoboda and Jason Carmichael each had seven tackles.

Jack Bissonnette had a blocked punt in the first quarter, which was returned for a 10 yard  touchdown by Caleb Sims.  Bissonnette also had an interception, his second of the year.  The Hawks had two turnovers in the game, the Cardinals none.

Jewell (2-6, 1-3) returns home for Senior Day next Saturday against Missouri S&T at 1:00 p.m.
