Baseball Splits Opening Season Doubleheader Against Cameron University

The William Jewell College baseball team opened its 2013 season in Lawton, Okla., by splitting a doubleheader with the Cameron University Aggies on Sunday afternoon.  Cameron won game one, 7-6, and the Cardinals came back to gain the split with a 10-5 victory.

In game one, The Aggies took control early by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first.  The Cards were able to tie it up at 3 with a single run in the second and two in the top of the third. 

Cameron answered back by scoring three in the bottom of the third and after Jewell scored a single run in the fourth the Aggies took a 7-4 lead going into the final three innings.  In the top of the fifth, Sam Morman connected for a two-run homer to pull the Cards to within one.  The Aggies however were able to close things out in the top of the sixth and seventh innings to hang on for the 7-6 win.   Starter, junior David Collins took the loss in the opener working six innings in which he allowed seven runs (zero earned) on six hits.  Collins fanned four batters and issued two walks in his first appearance of 2013.

In game two, the Cardinals banged out 12 hits to grab the 10-5 win.  Morman and JD Weyer each had three RBI's in the game.  Jordan Rice went 3-3 with three runs scored. 

Senior, righty Cody Downing worked four innings of relief to pick up the game two win. 

Game two starter Drew Mitrisin worked three innings giving up two runs and on six hits to open his 2013 season.

The Cardinals (1-1) return to the diamond tomorrow, when the face Cameron in a 9 inning contest that will start at 12:00 p.m.
