The William Jewell College baseball team earned a road doubleheader split at Rockhurst University Tuesday afternoon, winning the first game 2-1 behind a strong pitching performance from starting pitcher
Drew Mitrisin, before dropping the nightcap 7-3.
William Jewell is now 9-14 on the season and 5-9 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The Cardinals rode the arm of Mitrisin in game one. The junior from Columbia, Mo., tossed eight innings allowing just five hits and one run. He struck out four Hawks batters and walked one.
Jewell scored both of its runs in the top of the fifth.
Clarke O'Dowd and
Bryan Rezin delivered RBI singles during the inning after
Jordan Rice led off the inning with a triple.
The Cards did give up a run in the bottom of the eighth but
David Collins came in to slam the door in the ninth to earn his first save of the season.
Rockhurst earned the split with a 7-3 win in game two as they exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and coasted the rest of the way. The Cardinals were held to just six hits in the contest, two by O'Dowd and two by
Vance Gorman.
Jake Goessling earned the win for the Hawks tossing five innings giving up four hits and two runs while striking out three.
David Collins, took the loss and now stands at 1-6 on the season.
The Cardinals will travel to Quincy, Ill., for a four game series on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. both days.
