Cardinal Baseball Sweep Maryville in Saturday Double Dip

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Junior Drew Mitrisin and David Collins' strong starts, along with timely hitting, propelled Jewell (15-21, 11-15 GLVC) to a 7-3 and 6-2 sweep over Maryville (14-18, 13-11) in GLVC baseball Saturday.

The highlight of the day, however, was freshman Zach Tyson's imitation of Robert Redford in The Natural in the second game.

Mitrisin (6-1) went seven innings in the first game, allowing three runs on 10 hits, walking one and striking out five.  Cody Downing, pitching the eighth and ninth innings, faced only six batters in closing the game.  He struck out two.

The Cardinal offense scored in a variety of ways.  Jewell had an RBI single from Bryan Rezin, RBI doubles from Jordan Rice and Clark O'Dowd, and scored their other runs on a groundout, a passed ball, a wild pitch, and an error.

Maryville had four errors in the contest, while the Cardinals had no errors and turned a double play.

In the seven-inning second game, Collins went the distance for his third win of the year (3-7).  allowing two runs on five hits, walking four, hitting two and striking outsix.  The Cardinals made an error in the game but turned two double plays and added eight more hits to their attack, scoring on Rezin's two RBI singles, Jesse Gray's double, a sacrifice fly by J. D. Weyer, an infield single by Zach Tyson, and on a wild pitch.

Tyson's hit was one of the more memorable of the season, as he literally knocked the cover off the baseball on his liner to the shortstop, who picked up the interior of the ball, with the cover hanging on it, and tossed it to first base just after Tyson crossed the bag.

It was Collins's seventh complete game in 10 starts.  The Cardinals turned two double plays and had an error.

Jewell continues the series with a Sunday doubleheader starting at noon at Jewell's Jack Talley Stadium.  The games will also be available live online on the WJC Sports Network starting at 11:40 a.m. with Rick Cole and Tim Crone.
