Update: Cards Sweep Non-Conference Doubleheader with Ottawa; Weekend Series Changed

The William Jewell College baseball team cruised to a doubleheader sweep over Ottawa University Tuesday at Talley Stadium. The Cardinals belted out 13 hits in an 11-3 game one victory before winning the second contest, 8-0.  The Cardinals improved to 18-22 overall with the sweep.

The Cardinals will travel to Rolla, Mo., for a four game Great Lakes Valley Conference series on Sunday and Monday, a change from the original Saturday/Sunday dates made to a forecast of wet weather on Saturday.

In Thursday's opener, Ottawa (10-29)  jumped out to a 2-0 lead before Jewell exploded for five runs in the third.  Jesse Gray hit a two-run double to start the scoring in the third and were able to score two more runs off Ottawa errors and followed by an RBI single by Sam Thomas.   Jewell scored one in the fourth before exploding for five more runs in the fifth. 

First-year pitcher Billy Kirkpatrick picked up his first win of the season as he pitched 5 innings, striking out one.
Rezin recorded two hits and drove in four, while scoring once to help pace the Cardinal offense and first-year player Jordan Rice went 2-for-4 game, scoring  a run and plating two RBI's. 

The second game saw first-year pitcher Chris Mancha give a solid pitching performance as he earned his first collegiate victory.  Mancha pitched five innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, while striking out five.  Junior Blaze Carano and sophomore Ron Johnson pitched the sixth and seventh innings.

Rezin stayed red hot going a perfect 4-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.  Jesse Gray went 2-3 with two runs scored.
