Jewell Knocks Off Valpo on the Road

Box Score
William Jewell College built a 20 point lead against Valparaiso University Saturday in Indiana, but had to add a late Warren Frevert field goal to hold of the Crusaders 36-34.

The Frevert 42 yard kick made it a 36-27 lead for Jewell with just over three minutes left; a late Valpo touchdown closed the gap, but the Cards recovered the onside kick and were able to run out the clock for their first win.

It started out more like a track meet than a football game, with each team scoring on their first two possessions in the game. The Cardinals, though, were able to block a Crusader extra point try and take a 14-13 lead on back-to -back Thomas Cook Jr. runs of 27 and 73 yards.

Jewell and Valparaiso battled evenly through the second quarter, but a poor Crusader punt set the Cardinals up at the Valpo 26 yard line with just over three minutes left in the half.  With time winding down, Jewell gambled on a fourth and two run at the four yard line, with quarterback Sean Shelton picking up the first down, then throwing to Nate Egharevba in the back of the end zone on the next play to give Jewell a 20-13 lead, as the extra point was blocked.

On the first drive of the second half, Shelton hit Chris Smith on a catch-and-run 60 yard touchdown pass with a minute gone by to make it 27-13 Jewell, a lead the Cards carried into the fourth quarter.

With 12:40 left in the game, Cook scored his third rushing touchdown of the game from 11 yards out, and Jewell had a comfortable 33-13 lead even with a missed extra point try.

Valparaiso was far from done, though, with two quick touchdowns within two-and-half minutes, scoring with passes of 18 and 69 yards to pull within 33-27 with 6:47 to play.

The Cardinals, though, put together a game clinchig drive, capped by Warren Frevert's 42 yard field goal with 3:35 left, moving the lead to 36-27.

Valparaiso was able to mount one final drive, but thier unsuccessful onside kick effort, followed by two kneel-downs by the Cardinals, ended the game.

Jewell dominated the rushing statistics 273 yards to 26 yards, but Valpo ended up throwing the ball 55 times in the game for 495 yards playing from behind the last three quarters of the matchup.

Cook ended the game with 175 rushing yards on 22 attempts.  Shelton was 11-15 passing with 120 yards and two touchdowns, and added 70 yards rushing.  Smith had two receptions for a total of 70 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Jimmy DeStephano had 12 tackles.  Punter Zane Kitchell averaged 42.2 yards on five punts, including two inside the 20 yard line.

The Cardinals return to Greene Stadium next Saturday night to open GLVC play against McKendree University at 6:00 p.m.
