The William Jewell College baseball team got a solid start from Senior
David Collins and multiple-hit games from
Zach Tyson and
Hunter Brown, posting a 4-3 win over No. 5 St. Mary's (Texas) in the season opener, on Friday afternoon at Dickson Stadium on the campus of St. Mary's.
Jewell jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second by a sacrifice fly from
Coleman Waheed and a single from Tyson and an error on St. Mary's allowed Brown to score.Â
The Rattlers took a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth and two runs in the fifth before Jewell responded with two runs of their own in the top of the sixth. After the first two batters were retired
Jordan Rice started the rally with a single. Brown followed with another single followed by back to back RBI singles from Waheed and Brown.Â
Collins (1-0) then held the Rattlers in check for the rest of the game. He worked nine innings, allowing 10 hits and three runs (two earned), while striking out two.  Â
Jewell totaled 8 hits in the game and drew two walks. Â Waheed finished with two RBI's while Tyson and Brown each went two for four.Â
The Cards will return to action on Saturday with St. Mary's at 3:00 p.m. at Dickson Stadium.
