After enduring a 4-0 defeat in Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference opener versus Bellarmine, the William Jewell baseball team held off a late-inning Knight rally in the nightcap to salvage a split on the afternoon, winning game two 3-2.
In game one, the Cards and Knights found themselves in a pitching duel until Bellarmine scored all four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning and retired the Cards in order in the top of the ninth for the 4-0 win.
David Collins (1-2) took the loss going 7.2 innings giving up four runs (one earned) six hits, and one walk while striking out two.
Curtis McCombs was tough on Cardinal hitters all day as he pitched a two hit complete game shutout and struck out six.
In game two, Jewell opened the scoring in the first as
Luke Lucchetti led off with a double and scored on a double play two batters latter. Jewell added two more in the sixth on a
Zach Tyson fielder's choice RBI that plated
Jared Patton.
Nate Goff then singled to score
Hunter Brown to give the Cards a 3-0 lead.
The Knights made things interesting in the bottom of the seventh. Bellarmine scored two runs with one out however, Blaze
Carano was able to close things out leaving a Bellarmine runner stranded on second base.
On the mound,
Preston Felgate improved to 1-2 by throwing 6.1 innings, allowing only three hits and two runs (one earned), before turning the game over to Carano in the seventh, who allowed one hit en route to his first save of the year.
Coleman Waheed led the Cards offense going 3-4, while
Vance Gorman, Patton, Brown and Tyson all finished with two hits.
The Cards (3-6, 1-1 GLVC) will continue the four game series with Bellarmine tomorrow in Louisville, K.y., with first pitch scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
