The William Jewell College baseball team swept a doubleheader from Bellarmine University posting two shutouts on Sunday in Great Lakes Valley Conference Action in Louisville, K.y. The Cardinals won game one 4-0 and game two 3-0.
Senior
Drew Mitrisin (2-0) pitched a complete game shutout in game one giving up five hits, and two walks while striking out six.
The Cards scored three in the top of the second off an RBI single from
Zach Tyson and an error on Bellarmine plated home two more Cardinal runners.
Vance Gorman added a sacrifice fly in the third to give the Cardinals the 4-0 lead and Mitrisin was able to hold the Knights at bay from there.
Game two saw another outstanding pitching performance for Jewell.
Billy Kirkpatrick (1-1) tossed 8 solid innings giving up five hits and one walk while striking out one Knight batter.
Jewell took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth off an RBI double from
Hunter Brown and Brown scored one batter later off a single from Gorman. Tyson added an RBI single in the ninth and
Blaze Carano came in slammed the door on any comeback chance striking out two to earn his second save of the season.
Jewell, 5-6 overall and 3-1 in GLVC, will return to the field on Tuesday, March 18, as the Cardinals host Northwest Missouri State University at Talley stadium. That contest is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
