The William Jewell Cardinals returned to Great Lakes Valley Conference action today at Talley Stadium as they hosted University of Southern Indiana. The Cardinals fell 7-2 in game one but won 1-0 in 12 innings in game two.
In game one, the Cardinals fell behind 3-0 as Southern Indiana scored one in the first and two in the third. Jewell then struck for two runs in the bottom of the third as
Luke Lucchetti and
Bryan Rezin produced RBI's for the Cards. Southern Indiana would put the game away with 4 in the top of the seventh to produce the 7-2 winning margin.
David Collins (1-3) took the loss tossing 7 innings giving up 8 hits, seven runs, and one walk while striking out five. Dylan Pollack and
Ron Johnson each pitched an inning of relief giving up no runs.
Game two was scheduled for seven innings but went extra innings as the Cardinals scored the winning run on a
Coleman Waheed sacrifice fly that scored
Jordan Rice in the bottom of the 12th. Rice reached on a single then advanced to second on an errant pick-off throw.
Zach Tyson's ground out moved Rice to third and Rice was able to advance home off Waheed's deep fly to center field.
Preston Felgate tossed 10 innings giving up only one hit, and three walks while striking out six.
Blaze Carano (1-1) pitched two innings of no hit relief to pick up the win and struck out three.
The Cardinals, 6-9 overall and 4-2 in GLVC play will continue the four game series with Southern Indiana tomorrow with first pitch set for 12:00 p.m.
