The University of Southern Indiana swept William Jewell in Great Lakes Valley Conference action in Liberty on Sunday, downing the Cardinals 2-0 in a seven-inning game and 3-0 in a nine-inning matchup.
USI took three games of the four in the weekend series, scoring just 12 runs in the series but limiting the Cardinals to three runs for the series. Â The Jewell win came in a 12 inning game on Saturday as the Cards won 1-0.
Sunday's game was another set of excellent pitching matchups, with Jewell's
Drew Mitrisin taking a complete game loss in game one, throwing all seven innings and allowing four hits, two runs, walking two and striking out six. Â The Cardinals turned two double plays in the game. Â Mitrisin is 2-2 on the year.
The Eagles' run came on a sixth-inning triple by Andrew Cope, driving in both runs. Â Brian Rezin and
Luke Lucchetti had the only hits for the Cardinals.
In the second game,
Billy Kirkpatrick threw eight scoreless innings and worked around eight hits, including six leadoff hits in nine innings before coming out of the game after a leadoff hit in the ninth inning. Â
Blaze Carano entered the game and gave up two hits, but the Cardinal defense made four errors in the frame as Southern Indiana scored three runs. Â
Kirkpatrick took the loss and is 1-2 on the season, allowing one run in his eight innings, striking out two and walking none.
Jewell (6-10, 4-4 in the GLVC) plays a home midweek non-conference game against Missouri Western on Wednesday at 3:00 before travelling to Maryville to resume GLVC play against the Saints.
USI is 12-5, 5-1 in the GLVC.
