Cards Sweep Drury in GLVC Doubleheader

The William Jewell College baseball team swept a Great Lakes Valley Conference double-header over Drury University on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals won 9-8 in 8 innings in the opener and then won 10-5 in the night cap.

William Jewell improves to 11-22 overall and 9-13 in the GLVC, while Drury falls to 24-9 overall and 16-4 in the GLVC. 

In the opener, Jewell jumped out to a 5-0 lead with three runs in the second, one run in the third and one run in the fourth. Hunter Brown's two run homerun highlighted the three run second.

Drury responded with four runs in the bottom of the fourth then exploded for four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to take an 8-5 lead. 
Jewell rallied in the seventh to score three runs on four hits and an error to tie the game and Coleman Waheed hit a game winning homerun in the top of the eighth for the 9-8 win.     

Devon Burrell (1-0) picked up the win pitching 2.2 innings of relief.  1.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals again jumped out to a 5-0 win lead scoring 5 in the top of the first as Clarke O'Dowd, Sam Morman, Hunter Brown and Coleman Waheed all produced RBI singles in the inning.    Jewell then scored a single run in the second before Drury scored two in the second.  Jewell then responded with three runs in the top of the fourth highlighted by Morman's two-run double. Jewell scored a run in the sixth and Drury was able to plate home one in the fourth and two in the fifth which produced the winning 10-5 margin for Jewell. 

David Collins (3-4) allowed eight hits and five runs to pick up the win.  He walked two and also struck out two.

Luke Lucchetti went 3-4 with two runs scored while Morman finished 3-4 with three RBI's and a run scored. 

The Cardinals returns to action on Wednesday against Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo.  First pitch is set 4:00 p.m.
