Tritons Down Cardinals in GLVC Baseball Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
Missouri-St. Louis downed William Jewell in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader Saturday in Liberty, Missouri, winning 4-3 in the first game and 2-1 in the second game.

UMSL (12-10, 10-6 in GLVC play) jumped to a 2-0 lead after four innings of game one, only to have the Cardinals (8-18, 6-10) rally to tie the game at two-all behind Clark O'Dowd's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Hunter Brown.

The Tritons rallied for a run in the sixth inning, only to have Jewell tie the game again in the seventh inning on an RBI single by Zach Tyson.

UMSL retook the lead in the ninth inning against reliever Chris Mancha, who took the loss in relief of starter Drew Mitrisin. Mancha pitched three innings, giving up just a single run on three hits and striking out three in his appearance, and is 0-2 on the year.

The Cardinals had seven hits in the game to 13 for UMSL; neither team made an error and each team turned a double play.

In the second game, the Tritons again started quickly against Jewell starter Billy Kirkpatrick, scoring runs in the first and second innings to again take a 2-0 lead.  Kirkpatrick settled down though and gave up only two more hits through four innings to keep the Cardinals close.

The only run for Jewell scored in the fourth inning when Sam Morman singled, went to second on Bryan Rezin's hit, was sacrificed to third by Vance Gorman, and scored on a wild pitch.

Kirkpatrick (6.1 innings, two runs allowed on seven hits, two walks and no strikeouts) took the loss to drop to 1-4 on the season.  Blaze Carano came in in the seventh and threw two pitches to induce a ground ball double play, one of three turned by Jewell in the game.

The Cardinals had four hits to UMSL's seven.  Jewell made an error in the game.

UMSL returns to finish the four-game series on Sunday, with a seven-inning game scheduled for noon and a nine-inning game to follow.
