Box Score 2 The William Jewell Cardinal baseball team began a four game Great Lakes Valley Conference series with Drury University on Saturday at Talley Stadium. Jewell earned an incredible walk off 9-8 win in game one but were edged 5-4 in the nightcap.
In game one, the Panthers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead with a big five run second inning. The Panthers tacked on a single run in the fourth and two more in the sixth and took an 8-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
In the ninth, Jewell loaded the bases with no outs. The Cards were able to plate home two runs on a wild pitch and walk to cut the lead to 8-3. After cutting the lead to 8-5
Bryan Porting laced a double to center field to cut the lead to 8-7. The Cards then had runners at second and third with two outs and
Coleman Waheed at the plate. Waheed hit a single to centerfield that scored
Jesse Gray and
Andrew Miller for the incredible walk-off comeback win.
Matt Crawford (1-0) earned his first win of the season in relief.
Bryan Porting led the offensive attack going 2-5 with three RBI's and Waheed was 1-3 with a run scored and two RBI's.
Game two saw Drury score single runs in the first and third to go up 2-0. Jewell scored one in the bottom of the third on Morman's RBI single that scored
Luke Lucchetti.
The Panthers answered back with two more runs in the top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
Just as in the first game Jewell made a late inning comeback.
Hunter Brown hit a two-out three run homerun to tie the game 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth.
Drury then hit a two out solo shot in the top of the seventh to take a 5-4 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.
The Cardinals had the tying run on third with two out but the Panthers were able to close things out for the one run win.
Austin Kretchmar (8-2) took the loss going seven innings while giving up six hits, five runs (three earned) while striking out five.
Brown finished the game 2-3 with three RBI's.
The Cardinals (34-14, 23-11) will conclude the regular season with another doubleheader against Drury tomorrow at Talley Stadium beginning at 12:00 p.m.
