Box Score 2 The William Jewell College baseball team split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader with Truman State University on Saturday. The Bulldogs won the first game, 10-4 and the Cardinals took the second, 4-1 and also took the four game series 3-1.
Jewell moves to 27-19 overall and 12-12 in GLVC play while Truman is 19-27 overall and 11-13 in league play.
In the opener,
Mike Leeper got the Cardinals on the board with a two-run homerun in the top of the second inning. Truman followed with a three-run bottom of the third to take a 3-2 lead.
In the top of the fifth, Jewell manufactured two runs to take a 4-3 lead which would end up being their last lead of the game. The Bulldogs plated one in the bottom of the fifth then put the game out of reach with six runs in the sixth.
Right-hander
Garret Smith (2-3) was saddled with the loss. In five innings, he allowed 10 hits and 10 runs (9 earned) with seven strikeouts. Truman's Peter Young (3-0) earned the win tossing 1.2 innings in relief of Tyler Spencer and Adrian Morris.
Leeper was 1-for-3 with two RBI's for the Cardinals.
Left-hander
Billy Kirkpatrick pitched a complete game for the victory in the nightcap. He (5-3) gave up six hits and one run (zero earned) while striking out five batters. Mark Roberts (2-4) had the loss on the mound for the Bulldogs.
With the game tied 1-1 heading into the eighth inning catcher
Garrett McKinzie launched a two-out, two-run homerun to give Jewell a 3-1 lead.
Dylan Christie added a solo shot, his eighth in the last eight games, in the top of the ninth to give Jewell the winning 4-1 margin.
The Cardinals will close out the regular season with a four game home series against Quincy University on Saturday and Sunday May 7 and 8. First-pitch is set for 12:00 p.m. both days.
