Cards Split Sunday Doubleheader with Drury

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The William Jewell baseball team wrapped up their four game series with Drury University today at Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo.  With the wind blowing out to left both teams combined for 43 runs in the two games today.  Jewell edged out the Panthers 10-9 in game one and Drury came back to down the Cardinals 18-6 in the nightcap. 
 
The Panthers improve to 23-9 overall and 9-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.  Jewell moves to 14-15 overall and 7-5 in league play. 
 
Game one saw the Cardinals jump out to a 7-0 lead highlighted by a three-run homerun and solo shot from Garrett McKinzie
 
Drury responded with 7 runs in the top of the third before Jewell scored two in the bottom of the frame to lead 9-7 and then tied the game 9-9 with two in the fourth.  
 
The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth when McKinzie scored the winning run from third base off a wild pitch.
 
Zach Huthcherson (3-3) picked up the win in relief of Mack Stephenson
 
McKinzie led the Cards going 4-for-4 with five RBI's and four runs scored. 
 
In game two, Drury jumped out to a 3-0 lead before the Cardinals answered back with two runs in the bottom of the second.
 
In the top of the fifth Ryan Kayhill launched a two-run shot to put the Panthers up 5-2. 
 
Ben Pautler lead off the fifth with a triple and Tyler Carpenter drove him home with a double that cut the lead to 5-3 and that was the only run Jewell could get across that inning.
 
Brad Jelinek then tied the game for Jewell 5-5 with his second homer of the year a two-run shot in the bottom of the sixth. 
 
Shane Benes answered back with a two-run shot of his own that put Drury back on top 7-5 in the top of the seventh.   The Panthers added another one in the inning to lead 8-5. 
 
Drury would add a total of 7 runs in the eighth to blow the game open 15-5. 
 
Jewell plated a run home in the eighth but Drury tacked on three more runs for the 18-6 win.

Benes finished the game for the Panthers going 4-for-6 with four RBI's and two homeruns
 
Pautler was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for Jewell.
 
Brenden Beatty took the loss on the hill to fall to 3-5 on the season. 
 
 The Cardinals will host Maryville University for four games beginning on Friday April 14 at 12:00 p.m.
