The Cardinals take on a tough challenge in week two as they host West Texas A&M at 3 p.m. Throughout the weekend and during half time of Saturday's game Jewell will honor the 2019 Hall of Fame class which includes football alumnus Ken Clemens, '92 along with Nicole Revenaugh, '08, Jeremy Strack, '08, Larry Heaps, '62, Tim Wilson, '93 the 2004 baseball team and the 2006 men's soccer team.Â
YOU SHOULD NOTE
• Head coach
Chuck Lliteras spoke very highly of his defense during the preseason and they came through for him on Saturday, holding Southwest Baptist to nine points and scoreless through the first 37 minutes of play as the two-point conversion was scored by the Bearcat defense. Redshirt senior
Brock Geisz had a monster night, totaling a career-high 16 tackles, including a sack and an additional tackle for loss. Along with Geisz,
Jack Gordon,
Antonio Wabanimkee, and
Gianni D'Arienzo each posted double-digit tackles. D'Arienzo also teamed up with
Donte' Colum to account for seven pass breakups.
• Jewell earned their first season-opening win since 2014 last week with a 29-9 victory over Southwest Baptist in non-conference action. Despite SBU collecting more total offensive yards, the Cardinals dominated the redzone defensively, allowing the Bearcats to convert on just one of seven attempts. The stops included a sack, interception, and two blocked field goals.
Jalik Jaggwe posted a touchdown on both receptions of the day to total 119 yards while redshirt freshman
Nick Allsman shined on the ground with 79 rushing yards on 11 carries, including 55 in the fourth quarter alone.
• Junior quarterback
Will Schneider did not look as comfortable as normal in week one but with a new offensive line, that is to be expected. Despite not putting up flashy numbers he did collect 178 passing yards and three touchdowns including a 80-yard connection with
Jalik Jaggwe which is the longest pass completion since
Nick West's 85-yard toss against South Dakota Mines in 2015.
THE SERIES
This is the first meeting between the Buffs and Cardinals. Jewell is 9-9 against teams from Texas but is 0-3 since 1990.Â
