CARDINAL NOTES
- The Cardinals are coming off a 52-10 loss at McKendree University last week. Jewell got off to a slow start, spotting the Bearcats 31 points before finally getting on the board with a field goal just before the half.
- Jewell continues to be the best in the GLVC in avoiding penalties, coming into the week with just 23 total and 4.60 per game, which leads the league and ranks 23rd and 14th in Division II, respectively.
- Josh Yancey has become the primary return man over recent games, posting 100 yards during the last two games, including a 30 yard return last weekend, the longest by a Cardinal this season.
- Josh Click connected on a 45-yard field goal in the loss at McKendree, his second longest of the season. The freshman has also hit a 48-yarder, just four yards shy of the program's NCAA era record. Click's 48-yarder is the second longest in the conference this year and the freshman has already entered his name twice on Jewell's top-10 longest field goal list in the NCAA era.
- Brady Monks now sits with 1,353 punting yards through the first five games. The redshirt junior is just 113 shy of entering the all-time single season top-25 list. If the season ended today, his 38.66 punting average would be No. 11 all-time.
- Jewell has found success defensively against the run, allowing opponents 171.8 yards per game on the ground, fourth-best in the GLVC this fall. They must find a way, however, to defend the pass as they have averaged an allowance of 325.2 yards through the air, last in the league.
- A bright spot in the secondary has been Evan Sanders who has elevated his play in his senior season, leading the team with six defended passes. The Lee's Summit native enters the week ranked fourth in the GLVC with an average of 1.2 per game, just 0.4 behind the conference leader, Kasyus Kurns of UIndy. Unfortunately, for the Cardinals they will be without All-GLVC safety Gianni D'Arienzo for the remainder of the season following an injury last week.
- The Cardinal defense has found success on fourth down attempts, ranking second in the GLVC, allowing opponents to convert 56% of the time, second only to Missouri S&T (22%).
- The Cardinals have seen more success against the Bearcats in recent years than any other team, going 4-5 (.444) since the move to the NCAA level in the fall of 2011. Against all other opponents, Jewell is 27-75 (.265).
ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
- Southwest Baptist enters the week at 1-4 overall but have played one of the tougher schedules in the GLVC, including taking on the defending national champions in West Florida on the road.
- One of the top passing offenses in the GLVC, the Bearcats average just under 300 yards (294.8) through the air each week. Quarterback Cooper Callis has completed better than 67% of passes for 12 touchdowns this season.
- Callis has four targets who each have at least two receiving touchdowns. Preston Carson leads the way with 82.20 yards per game while Jordan Kent (78.00) and Cassian Foreman (60.60) are also among the league leaders.
- On the ground, the Bearcats are last in the conference with an average of just 51.2 yards per game.
- Defensively, Coleton Smith leads the GLVC with 75 tackles per game, 20 more than the next conference player, and an average of 15 per game.
- Robert Clardy is now in his seventh season at the helm of his alma mater and led the Bearcats to a NCAA-II playoff appearance in 2016.
