CARDINAL NOTES
- Jewell is coming off a 34-15 loss to Truman last Saturday. After a tough first half that saw the Cardinals score only two points, on a safety by Ja'Carri Lewis, Jewell outscored the Bulldogs 13-7 in the second half.
- This week's battle will be between the top two passing teams in the GLVC. Jewell is currently second in the league, averaging 324.5 passing yards per game, behind only SBU at 343. Senior Will Schneider put up 291 yards in the opener before going down with injury. Redshirt junior Anthony Pritzel stepped in last week and picked up where Schneider left off, throwing a career-high 302 yards.
- As strong as both teams are through the air, neither has found a consistent ground game this spring. The Cardinals are fifth in the conference with 76.5 rushing yards per game while Southwest Baptist follows in sixth with 70.5. Of the 153 total yards rushing that the Cardinals own, 82 belong to Schneider, so the Cardinals will be looking to Kirby Grigsby and newcomer Josh Yancey to help carry the load. Yancey has impressed in his first two games, averaging 95 yards of total offense.
- Defensively, Mario Magana, Jr. has returned with a vengence from an injury that saw him miss the entire 2019 season. The redshirt sophomore is tied for second in the GLVC with 8.5 tackles per night and is tied with Kole Wagener with the team lead with 17 total.
- Freshman Kian Betancourt has stepped up, grabbing two sacks for 14 yards lost, one in each of his first two collegiate games.
ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
- Southwest Baptist enters the season finale much like the Cardinals, also searching for their first win after dropping games to Truman and Missouri S&T.
- The Bearcats lead the GLVC with 343 passing yards per game, led by quarterback Cooper Callis who has completed 64% of his passes and thrown six touchdowns. The top target has been Jordan Kent with 11 receptions for 188 yards and two scores.
- Aaron Harris and Bryton Lewi lead the Bearcat defense with 17 total tackles and one interception apiece. Harris has posted 2.5 tackles-for-loss while Lewi has forced a fumble.
- Robert Clardy is in his sixth season leading his alma mater and was the 2016 GLVC Coach of the Year after leading the Bearcats to their first conference title.
