Box Score QUINCY, Ill. - The William Jewell baseball team got off to a strong start but could not maintain it, falling 8-2 to Quincy University on Friday afternoon, in the first of four games this weekend. The Cardinals drop to 10-15 on the year and 8-13 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- It took just two batters for the Cardinals to get on the board in the opening inning as Jake Wilcox singled and stole second before scoring on an RBI knock from Anthony Hansen.
- With two outs in the bottom of the first inning, Quincy got a solo home run and an RBI base hit to plate two and take the early lead. The Hawks added five runs on four hits in the sixth to break things open.
- In the seventh, Nick Modrcin doubled and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Alex Epp to get one run back. Quincy responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to push their lead back to six.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Hansen went 3-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Cardinals who finished with seven hits as a team.
- Thomas Hennelly (0-4) took the loss, allowing 10 hits over six-plus innings.
FOR THE HAWKS
- Quincy totaled 12 hits, led by four players with two each. Michael Nielsen led the Hawks with two hits, two runs and three RBI.
- Riley Martin went eight strong, striking out 16 Cardinals to get the win.
